In late 2024, significant changes were implemented in the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) to enhance clarity and flexibility for participants. On 3 October 2024, new legislation came into effect, introducing a refined definition of NDIS supports. This update ensures that participants’ funding is directed toward services and products that are reasonable, necessary, and directly related to their disability
UNDERSTANDING REASONABLE AND NECESSARY SUPPORTS
To determine if a support or product is appropriate for NDIS funding, consider the following:
Directly Related to Your Disability: The support should address challenges arising from your disability.
Aligned with Your NDIS Goals: It should assist you in achieving the specific goals outlined in your NDIS plan.
Value for Money: The support should represent good value compared to alternative options.
Effective and Beneficial: There should be evidence that the support will achieve its intended purpose.
Not Funded Elsewhere: The support should not be something that is the responsibility of another service system or covered by other funding sources.
For a comprehensive guide, refer to the NDIS’s “Can I Buy It with my NDIS Funding?” checklist:
